After dropping dead suddenly at the age of 18 while living in Australia, Mark Maxwell was very lucky to come through a week in a coma and survive. He had to give up his dream of a career in sport and embark on a journey to reinvent himself and discover new passions and purpose. This journey brought him through brain damage (which he kept secret), 2 months with limited short-term memory, 9 months of Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder and a handful of close brushes with death over the past 7 years. He treated his brain damage by learning Spanish, in which he is now fluent – a goal he achieved while travelling alone in South America in 2017.
Mark has worked in Investment Banking and in Google, both in Sydney. He set up an events business in Sydney which he ran during his time in Google, before returning to Ireland in December 2017. In 2018, he started operating as a career guidance counsellor, a college and early career strategist, and a graduate recruiter, all while writing his book ‘Death my Guidance Counsellor’ and working in a tech startup.
Mark is also a motivational speaker and has worked with several large businesses and universities in Australia and Ireland. His ‘Gradlife Journey’ workshops have been popular among some of the largest graduate employers in Ireland.
